Vancouver, BC – Health professionals across British Columbia are issuing a call to action regarding the Health Professions and Occupations Act (HPOA), a newly introduced piece of legislation that will profoundly affect the way care is delivered in the province. With the Act’s implementation fast approaching, many physicians are still unaware of the potential consequences for their practice and for the public’s access to care.

An open letter published in the BC Medical Journal by Dr. York Hsiang, a retired vascular surgeon, has raised significant concerns about the lack of awareness among healthcare providers regarding the HPOA. Dr. Hsiang stresses the importance of doctors understanding this legislation to ensure that the quality of care and patient access remain intact.

In his letter, Dr. Hsiang highlights the far-reaching effects this legislation could have on health professionals, potentially impacting the autonomy of their practices and the quality of care patients receive. His letter can be read in full in the BC Medical Journal: Physicians need to read and understand the Health Professions and Occupations Act.

“It is critical that all health professionals in BC familiarize themselves with this legislation to better prepare for its effects on the healthcare landscape,” Dr. Hsiang notes.

Call to Action: Health professionals across the province are urged to review Dr. Hsiang’s letter and discuss the potential implications of the HPOA with their colleagues and patients. The public is encouraged to be proactive by inquiring with their healthcare providers about the impact of this legislation on their care.
